The House
You enter this house through the courtyard and are greeted by an amazingly fertile and verdant garden. Walking along the path, you have on your right the downstairs part of the house and in front of you is a lovely covered outdoor area (currently full of drying garlic), perfect for outdoor eating in the summer.
Downstairs, there are three rooms. There is a cooking petchka (wood burning stove) which can be used for cooking and will keep the house warm at the same time! There is plumbing for a washing machine and the lovely, traditional Bulgarian sink already has hot water fitted. One room also has great ceiling beams.
Upstairs consists of three rooms in total; two large rooms, one smaller room, and a good sized hallway, which could easily be made into another room if so desired. All the rooms are full of light and some even have the old fashioned double glazing. The house also has a large cellar, which is currently being used to store jams and preserves, all made from home-grown produce. Although it is half underground it has a window, and thus natural light, and could make a great sized lounge.
The garden of 1650 sqm has an abundance of fruit and nut trees, a huge allotment, and various berries. There is easily enough land to be self-sufficient and, with the four animal sheds and barn, you would have plenty of space for animals too. The house has had continuous habitation so, although you will want to add your own touches and maybe modernise some areas, it is in great condition, so no possibility of nasty surprises!
Another great property investment from Bulgarian Village Homes!
Palamartsa
The village of Palamartsa, is less than 5m from the well-appointed municipal town of Popovo.
The village has a lot of history and is said to have recently found some of the oldest antiques buried in the hills in the village.
The village has a bar in the centre, with a shop next to it, which is owned by the mayor’s daughter.
The mayor regularly visits the bar and has a big part to play in the village and the progress.
He has recently got a grant and put a new asphalt road coming from Popovo.
The village also has a church, where local weddings are performed. Last year an English couple married there.
There is also a council building and 3/4 shops selling all the main products needed by a family.
The village has a football team, which last year were top of the league and moved up to the next league. The team have their own stadium in the village, and are sponsored by a beer company that will be funding for the stadium to be done up, and after each match on a Saturday, the team get together at the local bar and celebrate.
The village has a lot of older adults and not many children and the locals are trying to get families to come into the village and build it up. The older generation that live there are very friendly and are always there to help.
Many English and some americans have invested in the village already and are trying to follow on the Bulgarian traditions and customs. There are families that live in this village on a permanent basis, and some that come to visit, each summer.
